Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has expanded its premium SUV lineup in India with the introduction of the Fortuner Neo Drive and Legender Neo Drive variants. The updated models feature a new 48-volt mild-hybrid system designed to improve fuel efficiency, driving refinement, and overall performance. With this launch, Toyota aims to offer a more advanced and environmentally conscious driving experience while maintaining the rugged capability and reliability for which the Fortuner range is known.

The addition of mild-hybrid technology marks an important step in Toyota’s strategy to introduce cleaner mobility solutions without compromising the performance expected from large diesel-powered SUVs. The Neo Drive variants continue to cater to customers seeking premium SUVs with modern technology and long-distance touring capabilities.

Toyota Fortuner: Enhanced Diesel Engine with Hybrid Assist

Under the hood, both the Fortuner Neo Drive and Legender Neo Drive retain Toyota’s proven 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. However, the engine is now paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that enhances efficiency and driving comfort.

The system consists of a compact lithium-ion battery and a belt-integrated starter generator. This setup assists the diesel engine during acceleration, improves low-speed responsiveness, and enables smoother engine restarts. According to Toyota, the mild-hybrid technology helps improve low-end torque delivery while also reducing engine noise and vibrations, particularly in urban driving conditions.

The hybrid assist system is especially beneficial in stop-and-go traffic, where it can contribute to better fuel economy and a more refined driving experience. By supporting the diesel engine during key driving situations, the Neo Drive technology delivers improved efficiency without altering the SUV’s core characteristics.

Toyota’s Take on the Growing SUV Demand

Speaking about the launch, Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President of Sales, Service, and Used Car Business at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, highlighted the changing expectations of Indian SUV buyers. According to him, modern customers are increasingly looking for vehicles that combine bold styling, advanced technology, and greater efficiency.

He noted that the introduction of the Neo Drive variants reflects Toyota’s commitment to meeting these evolving demands. The company believes the new mild-hybrid system is among the first technologies of its kind in this segment and supports Toyota’s broader multi-pathway approach toward carbon neutrality.

Toyota Fortuner: Design

The Fortuner and Legender Neo Drive variants retain the bold styling that has made them popular among SUV buyers. The standard Fortuner continues with its muscular stance, large grille, and commanding road presence.

The Legender, meanwhile, maintains its distinctive identity with a more premium and sportier design. It features a dual-tone exterior finish, split LED headlamps, and a sharper front fascia that differentiates it from the standard model.

Inside the cabin, both SUVs continue to offer a premium environment with dual-tone leather upholstery, soft-touch dashboard materials, and spacious seating arrangements. The interiors are designed to provide comfort during long-distance travel while maintaining a luxurious feel.

Toyota Fortuner: Packed with Safety and Essential Tech

Toyota has retained a comprehensive list of safety features in the Neo Drive variants. These include seven airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Assist Control, and the Traction Control System (TRC).

Additional safety equipment includes pretensioner seat belts with force limiters, child safety features, and an emergency auto-unlock function. These features further strengthen the Fortuner and Legender’s reputation as dependable family SUVs capable of handling a wide range of driving conditions.

Pricing and Availability

The Toyota Fortuner Neo Drive 48V is priced at ₹44.72 lakh (ex-showroom), while the more premium Legender Neo Drive 48V is available at ₹50.09 lakh (ex-showroom).

With the introduction of the Neo Drive variants, Toyota has successfully enhanced its flagship SUVs with modern mild-hybrid technology while preserving the performance, durability, and premium appeal that have made the Fortuner and Legender among the most sought-after SUVs in India.
