Max Verstappen concluded his remarkable 2023 Formula 1 campaign in style with a commanding victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the Red Bull Racing driver controlled the race from start to finish, securing yet another dominant win and capping off one of the most successful seasons in Formula 1 history.

Verstappen crossed the finish line 17.993 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, underlining the Dutch driver’s superiority throughout the season. The victory marked his 54th Formula 1 race win, moving him into third place on the all-time winners list. Only Lewis Hamilton, with 103 victories, and Michael Schumacher, with 91 wins, remain ahead of the reigning world champion.

The triumph also served as an emotional farewell to the car that helped Verstappen achieve unprecedented success during the 2023 campaign. Reflecting on the victory after the race, the Red Bull driver acknowledged the significance of the moment and expressed gratitude to his team for their extraordinary efforts throughout the year.

Verstappen said it was an emotional experience during the in-lap, knowing it was the final race for the car that had delivered so much success. He praised Red Bull for an incredible season and admitted that matching such a dominant campaign in the future would be extremely difficult.

Mercedes outpaces Ferrari

While Verstappen’s victory was never in doubt, the battle for second place in the Constructors’ Championship provided plenty of drama during the closing stages of the race.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez initially crossed the line in second position, but a five-second penalty for a collision with McLaren driver Lando Norris significantly impacted the final results. The penalty became a crucial factor in determining not only the race classification but also the outcome of the Constructors’ Championship battle between Mercedes and Ferrari.

In a strategic move, Charles Leclerc allowed Perez to overtake him in the final laps. Ferrari hoped Perez could build enough of a gap over Mercedes driver George Russell to retain second place even after the penalty was applied. Such a result would have helped Ferrari secure additional points in the championship standings.

However, the plan ultimately fell short. Although Perez finished second on the road, the five-second penalty dropped him to fourth place in the final classification. Leclerc inherited second position, while Russell finished third. Perez missed retaining his podium place by just 1.1 seconds.

The outcome proved decisive for Mercedes, which accumulated enough points to secure second place in the Constructors’ Championship ahead of Ferrari. The result marked a strong recovery for the Silver Arrows after a challenging season that saw them struggle to consistently challenge Red Bull.

Behind the leading trio, McLaren’s Lando Norris finished fifth after another impressive performance. His teammate Oscar Piastri crossed the line in sixth place, capping off a successful rookie campaign.

Fernando Alonso continued Aston Martin’s strong season with a seventh-place finish, while Yuki Tsunoda delivered valuable points for AlphaTauri in eighth. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton secured ninth place for Mercedes, and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll completed the top ten.

Looking Ahead to the 2024 Season

With the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix bringing the curtain down on the 2023 Formula 1 season, teams and drivers now shift their focus toward preparations for the upcoming campaign.

Fans will not have to wait too long for the action to return. Pre-season testing for the 2024 Formula 1 season is scheduled to take place from February 29 to March 2, giving teams an opportunity to evaluate their new cars before the championship officially begins.

After a season dominated by Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, attention will now turn to whether rival teams can close the gap and challenge the reigning champions in what promises to be another exciting year of Formula 1 racing.
