VW Unveils ID Era, Evo, and Aura Concepts

Volkswagenโ€™s ID sub-brand introduced three new concept cars in China; the ID Era, ID Evo, and ID Aura. These models represent the companyโ€™s future direction in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) segment, encompassing plug-in hybrids, range-extender vehicles, and fully electric cars. The debut is a key step in Volkswagenโ€™s ambitious strategy to bring 30 new models to the Chinese market by 2027.

Developed with SAIC, the ID Era SUV represents Volkswagenโ€™s first range-extender powertrain. The petrol engine here does not drive the wheels but acts as a generator to charge the battery. With full fuel and full charge in the batteries, the ID Era claims a 1,000 km range. It offers an interior configuration with seven spacious seats, mirroring the setup on the international version of the Volkswagen Tayron.

ID Evo SUV

ID Evo shares bloodlines from the Anhui team with the ID Unyx, a rebadged Cupra Tavascan. The Evo, however, replaces the coupe-like rear with the traditional SUV shape. Touted with an all-new 800V electrical system, replacing that of the older 400V Unyx, it also features a newly zoned computing architecture which allows advanced digital services and quick input in terms of over-the-air software updates.

ID Aura Sedan

ID Aura

Developed in conjunction with FAW, the ID Aura sedan concept advances an all-new sleek design that echoes the silhouette of the VW Bora. It is the first compact car built on the new Compact Main Platform explicitly designed for the Chinese market. Though details on the size of the vehicles havenโ€™t been available, the Aura indicates VWโ€™s intentions for future electric sedans.

What Comes Next

All three vehicles move to production with a Level 2++ autonomous driving system. According to Volkswagen, this technology enables cars to operate independently under the eye of the driver in situations such as overtaking, turning, and merging into traffic.
