Volvo is ready to launch the updated XC90 in India next month. Although the changes aren’t significant, the luxury SUV features a new design, a larger touchscreen with Google-powered software, and enhanced comfort. However, we do not anticipate substantial internal modificationsโVolvo will continue using the current powertrain. The XC90 will compete with the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE, and Audi Q7 in the luxury SUV market.
Volvo XC90 Facelift: Exterior
The updated XC90 takes inspiration from the Volvo EX90’s design, giving it a sleeker and more contemporary appearance. The iconic ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights have been revamped, and the grille now includes diagonal slats to provide a more elegant appearance. The front bumper features vertical air vents, enhancing its luxurious look. Additionally, a fresh design for the alloy wheels (20-22 inches worldwide) guarantees it continues to attract attention.

Volvo XC90 Facelift: Interior & Features
Enter the interior, and you’ll see that Volvo has maintained a familiar atmosphere while incorporating some considerate enhancements. The most significant alteration? A bigger 11.2-inch touchscreen replaces the previous 9-inch model. It now operates on Google-based software, providing a more seamless interface and OTA (over-the-air) updates. Volvo has also emphasized sustainability by incorporating more recycled materials within the cabin. Although the existing XC90 is available as a 7-seater, Volvo could launch a 5- or 6-seat variant now.
Performance & Engine
Internally, everything remains the same. The XC90 will maintain its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine coupled with a mild-hybrid system. It produces 250hp and 360Nm of torque, reaching 100kph in 7.7 seconds. Power is delivered to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Volvo has not yet verified a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant for India, but it may be in the pipeline.
Expected Price & Rivals
Currently, the Volvo XC90 B5 AWD is priced at Rs 1.01 crore (~$121,000), but we anticipate a price increase of more than Rs 10 lakh (~$12,000) due to the facelift and additional features. Within the premium SUV segment, it will continue competing against the BMW X5 (Rs 97.80 lakh / ~$117,000), Mercedes GLE (Rs 99 lakh / ~$118,500), and Audi Q7 (Rs 88.70 lakh / ~$106,000).
