Mercedes-Benz G-Class STRONGER THAN THE 1980s

Mercedes-Benz has welcomed the G-Class Edition “Stronger Than The 1980s,” an even more special edition of this world-famous off-road vehicle. The limited-run model commemorates the original W 460 G-Wagen, the winning granddaddy that started the bloodline of the G-Class. Naturally, the limited production run of just 460 units worldwide pays homage to the original model code W 460.

The G-Class Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ liberally borrows from the first-generation G-Wagen with nostalgic overtones wrapped in modern refinement. Several MANUFAKTUR solid colors are available from the 80s: Agave Green, Cream, and Colorado Beige. The important design retro references include silver-finished 5-spoke alloy wheels, a blacked-out grille and bumpers, protective grates over the headlamps, and black-finished wheel arch extensions and side runners. The turn indicators sport orange lenses as they would have in that period and even the big Mercedes badge on the bonnet is styled to be contemporaneous with the original from the 1980s. Meanwhile, the rear sports a large Mercedes-Benz logo on the soft spare wheel cover instead of the modern one, with more glamorous vintage-style ‘Mercedes-Benz’ badging on the tailgate.

The retro theme continues with thoughtful detailing borrowed from the original G-Class. The seats are adorned with grey fabric inserts reminiscent of the upholstery used in the early ’80s. The passenger grab handle bears the ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ branding, and the center console is embossed with a nice note that reads ‘1 of 460’, further enhancing the essence of exclusivity in this edition. The original badge features the ‘Schรถckl Proved’ lettering with an illustration of the classic G-Wagen painted in the vehicle exterior color. Stock all-terrain tires further enhance the rugged personality of this SUV.

Powertrain

In terms of engineering, the special edition G-Class remains exactly like any normal G-Class. While most of the adjustments are for aesthetics and nostalgia, the special edition’s powertrain continues to deliver performance and off-road capabilities as has come to be expected from the modern generation G-Class.

India Launch: Still Unconfirmed

Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed whether the G-Class Edition ‘Stronger Than The 1980s’ will be launched in India. However, considering that the brand has launched previous limited G-Class editions here, like the AMG G 63 Grand Edition in 2023, there seems to be a possibility of a few select units being available in Indian showrooms.
