Its boxy shape guarantees that it appears to be a G-Class, specifically the G 450d. It has a revised A-pillar design, a spoiler on the front of the roof, air curtains in the rear wheel-arch flares, and a slightly raised hood with air curtains to increase aerodynamics. The EQG has a distinctive appearance because the LED lights encircle the nose.

According to Mercedes, the drag coefficient has decreased to 0.44 from 0.48Cd for the G 450d. Since the G 580 is an EV, the conventional boot-mounted spare wheel can be replaced with a charging wire holder.

Unless we’re counting EV-exclusive switches, it’s also a G on the inside. The MBUX multimedia system, with paired 12.3-inch displays for the instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touch screen for the center console, is retained. Below the central touchscreen are physical buttons for controlling heat, ventilation, and the air conditioner. Mercedes has also introduced adaptive cruise control.

Switches for going off-road are affixed between AC vents, and they call it the Offroad Cockpit. The boot capacity is 555 liters, which is smaller than in petrol and diesel G-Classes, and, of course, there is no storage area in front of the bulkhead.

Battery, Range & Performance

This electric G-Class gets the same size battery as the EQS SUV: 116kWh. However, the cells are set into a differently shaped pack and kept between the ladder frame chassis rails. Charging from 10-80% takes 32 minutes using a fast charger of up to 200kW, and the car’s battery has a traditional WLTP range of up to 473km.

The hub motors are specified in four numbers to provide more torque without increasing the lag between the gears, and the G-Class has a two-speed gearbox. The total horsepower is 587, with total torque estimated to be 1,164 Nm. The CO2 emission per 100 km is 113g during a 0-100kph run that takes 4.7 seconds, and the car’s top speed is 180kph.
