Tata Motors deserves credit for its relentless effort in elevating the Harrier since its 2019 inception. In a span of just one year, the model witnessed power enhancements, the introduction of an automatic transmission, and the long-awaited panoramic sunroof.
Moreover, special editions introduced features that later became the standard. Now, Tata presents the most comprehensive Harrier update with new exterior styling, an enhanced interior, advanced tech, and crucial mechanical changes.
The Tata Harrier was among the early SUVs to receive the Dark edition treatment back in 2019. This special edition has played a significant role in boosting the SUV’s sales, and it’s been a hit among car buyers.
Now, Tata Motors is taking it up a notch with a new variant, the Red Dark series, which was first unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo. This special edition is not limited to the Harrier; it’s also available for the Safari and the Nexon.
The Red Dark range, positioned above the standard Dark Harrier, brings a slew of advanced features, enhanced technology, and fresh visual elements into the mix. But the question remains – is it worth the investment?
A hallmark of the Dark range has always been its all-black aesthetic, and Tata Motors retains this aspect while adding distinctive touches to set the Harrier Red Dark apart.
It still proudly wears the Dark badging on the fenders, but now it features a striking red hue. Additionally, there’s a red accent on the grille that complements the theme. Tata also offers red brake calipers for all four wheels, adding a sporty flair to the SUV’s overall look.
Tata Harrier Facelift Exterior
The exterior updates, typical of a facelift, primarily involve elements like lights and bumpers. But the combined impact of these new elements creates a more edgy and striking Harrier.
Upfront, a larger grille with metal embellishments takes center stage, while slim Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs) above have been refined, featuring a connecting light bar that creates a welcoming animation.
The main headlights are now LED and vertically oriented within angular cutouts on the bumper. The profile changes are limited, but new wheel designs, now up to 19 inches, distinguish the updated Harrier. In the rear, tail-lamps have been reshaped, and a full-width light bar has been added, along with a revamped bumper. The fit and finish could still see improvements in some areas.
Tata Harrier Facelift Interior and Features:
The interior has seen significant changes as well, with an updated steering wheel and new persona-based interior color themes. The 10.25-inch digital driver’s display offers clear graphics, while the new 12.3-inch touchscreen stands out as a significant tech upgrade.
It includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, air purifier controls, and 13 JBL sound modes. Ambient lighting adds a touch of sophistication, though the touch slider for the blower control may take sometime getting used to.
Voice commands are a handy feature, with the Harrier recognizing six languages. The car also offers terrain modes, although it’s not designed for off-roading.
The front seats are spacious and comfortable, equipped with power adjustments and driver’s seat memory settings. Fit and finish have improved, although glossy black materials may require extra care for upkeep.
The rear seats are accommodating, featuring sunshades on the rear windows and airline-style headrests. The boot is spacious and benefits from a powered and gesture-controlled tailgate.
Tata Harrier Facelift Ride and Handling
The Harrier’s driving experience has been refined through changes in steering, larger wheels, suspension tweaks, and rear disc brakes. The new electric power steering reduces effort at low speeds while offering a more connected feel at higher speeds.
Steering kickback has been resolved, resulting in improved handling. The ride quality remains firm at low speeds but excels at absorbing bumps, ensuring high-speed stability.
Tata Harrier Facelift Engine, Gearbox, and Performance
The Harrier retains its diesel engine, now BS6.2 compliant, with 170hp and 350Nm of torque. It maintains strong performance but could benefit from further refinement.
Gearbox options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic. The manual gearbox exhibits improved shifts, although the long clutch travel might require some adjustment.
Tata Harrier Facelift Safety and ADAS
While the Harrier has yet to be rated by safety organizations, it aims for a 5-star rating. All Harriers come with essential safety features, and higher trims offer an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) with features like blind spot warning, cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition.
However, some features, like adaptive cruise control, are limited to automatic variants.
Tata Harrier Facelift Price and Verdict
The 2024 Harrier is expected to see a price increase, starting around Rs 16 lakh for the base trim and reaching Rs 25 lakh for the top-end version. With these updates, Tata has addressed many of the Harrier’s shortcomings, making it a more comprehensive package with improved tech, styling, and a better driving experience. While the absence of a petrol engine and some refinement issues persist, the updated Harrier is a compelling choice in its segment.
