Urban Cruiser EV

The production-spec Urban Cruiser EV, which will make its public premiere at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show in January, has been revealed by Toyota Motor Corporation. The Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant will create the SUV with no emissions.

Only a year after introducing the Maruti eVX-based Urban SUV concept, Toyota Motor Corp. has unveiled the final production model, known as the Urban Cruiser EV. The commercial Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is a little smaller than the concept model, but it shares many design elements with the newly unveiled Suzuki e-Vitara, which will be sold in India under the Maruti brand.

The design and several other elements of the Suzuki e-Vitara are similar to those of the production Toyota Urban Cruiser EV, which is marginally smaller.

For the final production model, many of the elements from the concept’s design have been simplified. Although the headlights and grille are still small, they are not as thin as those on the concept, and the radiator portion on the front bumper is less angular.

The majority of the two-box e-SUV’s side design elements have been kept from the concept, and Toyota claims that 18-inch and 19-inch aero-optimized wheels will be available. Black plastic cladding gives it the necessary SUV characteristics. The Urban Cruiser EV’s rear door handles are located in the C-pillar, just as the e-Vitara.

The dimensions of the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV are 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, 1,640 mm in height, and 2,700 mm in wheelbase.

Toyota’s new-born EV has a large back bumper and a scaled-down but longer version of the concept’s roof spoiler and taillights. The Urban Cruiser and the e Vitara do share a lot of similarities in terms of rear appearance. According to Toyota, a large range of color choices will be available, including two-tone models with a black roof that contrasts.

The born-electric SUV’s overall length (4,285mm) and width (1,800mm) have decreased by roughly 15mm and 20mm, respectively, from concept to production, while its height has increased by 20mm (1,640mm). At 2,700mm, the wheelbase length is the same. It’s interesting to note that the Urban Cruiser EV is slightly bigger than the Suzuki e Vitara due to these measurements. According to Toyota, the e-SUV has a turning radius of 5.2 meters.

Much of what lies within the Urban Cruiser EVโ€™s cabin will be instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with the e Vitara, including the dashboard layout, the two-spoke steering wheel, the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and the 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen.

The images unveiled by Toyota include an electronic parking brake with auto hold, drive modes, single zone auto climate control, wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other touches were also verified, in at least upper trim grades, involved the electrical height/fore and aft adjustment of the driverโ€™s seat, the JBL audio system, a power operated moon roof. The Japanese brand has also confirmed that the Urban Cruiser’s rear seats will come with a sliding and reclining function, along with a 40:20:40 split-folding function.

Safety features for the Urban Cruiser EV include a 360-degree camera system and next generation advanced driver assistance systems or ADAS for short that includes pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert and lane keep assist. As in the Maruti on which the new car is based, six air bags are expected to be provided.

Urban Cruiser EV: EV battery and Motors

Talking about born-EV by Suzuki, we have written before that the e-SUV in question is almost identical to the Suzuki e-Vitara, including the skateboard platform, the battery systems, as well as the motors. The Urban Cruiser EV is available with Lithium Iron Phosphate battery options, 49 kWh and 61kWh. Urban Cruisers with the less capacity battery will have a front axle mounted 144hp power and 189Nm torque motor while the one with the more capacity battery, will have a motor with 174hp power and 189Nm torque.

Urban Cruiser will also have the AWD variant, equipped with an extra 61 kWh battery and a 65 hp motor in the rear axle. The Urban Cruiser in AWD form has a total output of 184 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. These versions will also receive a hill descent control and โ€˜Trail Modeโ€™ that is useful during rough driving.

Urban Cruiser EV: Expected Launch

Though the Japanese brand has not disclosed when it will launch its new EV in the Indian market, we anticipate the Urban Cruiser sometime in the second half of the year 2025.

Since it is an international model (although, it will be assembled in India at Suzukiโ€™s Gujarat plant), the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will launch at the 2025 Brussels Motor Show that kicked start on 10th January. The company has however affirmed that such prices in its model customized for the UK market will be released during the third quarter of 2025.
