The new Bentley Flying Spur has been unveiled, replacing the brand’s iconic W12 engine with the same electrified setup used in the Continental GT.
Its plug-in hybrid powertrain combines a 592bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with a gearbox-mounted electric motor to provide a combined 738 lb-ft and 771bhp, 145bhp more than the departed W12. This makes it Bentley’s most powerful four-door sedan yet.
Bentley has chosen to use an electric motor rather than cylinder-deactivation technology, with the V8 shutting down at low loads, such as coasting at highway speeds. The Flying Spur can also drive in electric mode at speeds of up to 87mph or three-quarters throttle, and the 187bhp engine is said to be “more than enough to keep up with traffic in most situations”.
It works on a 25.9kWh battery, with a claimed maximum range of 47 miles. It can be recharged at speeds of up to 11kW using an AC charging connection or the engine’s Charge mode. Bentley claims the car has a total range of 515 miles with both the battery and the gas tank full. The company claims it is the most efficient Bentley ever but has yet to reveal any fuel economy data.
The vehicle’s chassis has also been altered. The new twin-valve dampers are said to improve bump absorption in Comfort mode while keeping the body control available in Sport. The electronic stability control software has been modified to keep the vehicle stable in a broader variety of situations.
Exterior visual improvements include squared lower air dams and a revised ADAS sensor. The Speed versions feature a custom grille, front bumper, and rear splitter.
